The Best Places to Visit in Jordan 🇯🇴

Welcome to the ultimate guide on exploring the wonders of Jordan. Jordan is undoubtedly one of the most unique destinations in the world. It’s rich history, breathtaking landscapes, and cultural diversity make it a MUST-VISIT for history or geography buffs and adventure lovers.

Getting to Jordan is a breeze if you get yourself a Jordan Pass, which includes your Visa Hassle-Free. Plus, even though there aren’t any direct flights yet, a quick stopover in Dubai makes it super convenient for Indians.

1. Petra

The ancient rose city, is a masterpiece carved into the sandstone cliffs of southern Jordan. The ruins of one of the greatest civilizations in the world transported me to another dimension! I love imagining how this place might have looked a few centuries ago. If you are visiting Jordan, Petra is an absolute mustvisit.

Tourists are not allowed in Petra after 7 pm, but you can still experience its magic if you stay at one of the most unique Airbnbs in the world.

This Airbnb, carved inside the historical caves of Jordan, costs only INR 2500 per night. It’s an amazing deal, right? Living here, you get to experience the Bedouin culture—eating local food, riding horses, and sleeping in caves. We also enjoyed a beautiful light and sound show, but you can experience the candle show called ‘Petra by Night.’

Walking through the ruins of Petra at night is one of the most memorable moments of my life. It felt like stepping into a historical novel. The city carved into red sandstone with intricate detailing is mind-blowing. Here are some hikes I recommend in Petra:

  • Monastery Hike
  • Sabra Trails
  • High Place of Sacrifice
  • Walk to Little Petra or enter the main Petra city via Little Petra

2. Wadi Rum

What if I told you that you could experience Mars on Earth? That’s Wadi Rum in a few words! The red sand, red sandstone, and natural bridges will make you question reality.

I explored this endless desert oasis on a thrilling jeep safari ride, and it was surreal. Movies like The Martian and John Wick were shot here—crazy, right?

Humans arrived at this place about 12,000 years ago, and you can still find carvings and inscriptions from back then. The rock formations here are the result of millions of years of geological evolution. Waking up at 5 AM for a sunrise here is an absolute must! The sky here is breathtaking as there’s no light pollution, just you and the endless sky over the endless desert oasis.

3. Dead Sea

A trip to Jordan is incomplete without experiencing the Dead Sea. It’s been a part of my bucket list as far back as I can remember, and it absolutely lives up to the hype. The Dead Sea’s salt content is a whopping 34%, which means drowning here is IMPOSSIBLE! The salt formations are white, beautiful, and crystal-like but sharp, so be careful walking on them.

You can either drive from Amman to the Dead Sea, which takes about an hour, or book a hotel by the Dead Sea. Staying at a hotel here offers convenient access to the water and the opportunity to enjoy the therapeutic mud treatments. I chose to book a hotel by the Dead Sea to make the most of my visit and enjoy the breathtaking views right from my room.

Here are two recommendations:

  • Budget Option: Dead Sea Spa Hotel – This hotel offers great amenities and direct access to the Dead Sea at an affordable price.
  • Luxury Option: Kempinski Hotel Ishtar Dead Sea – For a luxurious experience, this hotel offers exceptional services, stunning views, and private beach access.

The mineralrich mud here is the most expensive soil in the world and is said to cure acne, back pain, arthritis, and make your skin glow. Legend has it that even Cleopatra used it. Jordan’s Dead Sea is unlike anywhere else on Earth, and you have to experience it for yourself.

4. Wadi Hatta:

Wadi Hatta is a hidden gem nestled within the rugged landscapes of Jordan. This was one of my favourites—few tourists and pristine landscapes.

The rugged terrains and clear streams flowing through them are unlike anything I’d seen before. It’s perfect for nature lovers, geography nerds, and adventure seekers.

The huge rocks make it ideal for rock climbing. Take a leisurely hike along the trails, admire the stunning scenery, and perhaps take a refreshing dip in the cool waters. Wadi Hatta offers endless opportunities for exploration and discovery.

 5. Jerash and Ajloun:

Jerash holds one of the biggest Roman ruins outside of Rome. The incredible ruins here will transport you back in time. Jerash is an iconic place that you can’t miss, especially if you’re a history buff.

The Ajloun Castle, built by the Egyptians, has withstood several attacks and earthquakes and is still in good shape.

These spots are perfect for learning about Jordan’s countryside and can be combined in a day trip from Amman. They are free to visit with the Jordan Pass (a visa and tourism bundle that includes entry to 40+ sites in Jordan)

6. Red Sea:

Located in Aqaba, which is the only coastal town in Jordan is a great destination for adventure lovers. Snorkeling in the Red sea has to be on your bucketlist. The Aqaba marine reserve is a protected area known for its colourful corals, and home to 500+ fish species, which makes it a Must visit destination for snorkeling and diving.

Popular snorkeling spots include the Seven Sisters – which consists of seven coral pillars and a sunken tank which has grown into an artificial reef. There are lots of coral reefs as well, and you can see a wide variety of marine life. The Red sea is BEST for Scuba diving because the water is warm all year around and the visibility is high.

You can even spot seahorses and pipefishes here! Aqaba is a 90 minute drive from the Petra city and just one hour away from Wadi rum.
